College students are not limited to their faculties and study programs, they have a great role to play in bringing the people of their societies together, building a deeper connection, and enriching individuals with knowledge and aid.
Community service is a win-win situation, because not only does it benefit societies, but it also significantly influences volunteer students. Those who contribute to their societies are allowed the chance to get in touch with the public, learning about culture, habits, and what makes a community whole, all while changing lives in the process. Furthermore, these acts will in return help students develop essential skills such as leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving, which could assist them in breaking into the job market with confidence and proficiency.
At Dar Al-Hekma, students have many options. For example, aspiring female leaders in the field of education can elevate their career prospects through a master’s degree in educational leadership, a program that combines academic rigor with practical insights to prepare them for administrative roles in educational institutions.
Dar Al-Hekma University has done an amazing job, guiding their students towards community service ever since 2007, making them the first educational institution to introduce a community service program in Saudi Arabia.
This blog explores how DAH has given back to society over the years, portraying the services they’ve provided in attempts to take social responsibility and inspire both organizations and individuals alike.
Making Jeddah Greener
Saudi Arabia wishes to make the country a greener place, as they take advantage of the presence of many abandoned or degraded agricultural lands that are perfectly suited to be converted into forests. The aim is to also vitalize urban areas with dense tree planting which will benefit in reducing temperatures by 2.2 degrees Celsius and enhance air quality.
On International Volunteer Day, DAH launched an afforestation initiative in collaboration with the Jeddah Municipality in Al-Taawun Park in Jeddah, where they planted countless trees across the park, breathing further life and beauty into the place. This initiative falls in alignment with the Kingdom’s vision of planting 600 million trees by the year 2030.
Cats Are Important Too
In 2022 the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve launched The Global Catwalk initiative in cooperation with the Catmosphere Foundation. Catwalk is an annual, global, up-to-7km outdoor walk that’s designed with the purpose of raising awareness about our wellbeing and how it interconnects with the dire conditions surrounding the 7 Big Cats. The link between humans and big cats is quite simply the environment. Both species rely on a healthy, clean environment for survival. While it is important for human societies, economies, and health, it’s also crucial for animal habitat, reproduction, and food supply.
The initiative also urges people to do more sports, which highlights a healthier body image, and tones down the possibility of health risks.
Dar Al-Hekma University has shown the Kingdom and their own students how women can play a part in combating social and environmental issues as they took part in the 2022 Catwalk initiative, walking the 7 km distance and reminding the community of the importance of both wellbeing and the preservation of wild cats every step of the way.
A Cleaner Kingdom
The Saudi community has been prone to littering issues over time, which has left many streets and shores drowning in waste. Vigilant and concerned individuals alongside local municipalities have taken a stand to put a limit to the ongoing littering by initiating community cleanups that aim to raise awareness and clean the streets and shores of the Kingdom.
Thousands of volunteers have joined multiple cleanup initiatives, and among those thousands were students of Dar Al-Hekma who were urged by the standards their university has taught them to contribute to a better state of life for their country.
In 2019:
Dar Al-Hekma students joined hands with Al Ayoun Jeddah community to clean the southern half of the Jeddah Corniche after it was flooded with leftover food, plastic bottles and tissue paper. They’ve helped in restoring life and sanitation to this beautiful seaside boardwalk, allowing both residents and tourists to once again enjoy this beautiful picnicking location.
In 2022:
DAH have once again set out to clean the Kingdom’s coastlines, this time participating in the world clean-up day to make the Khaleej Salman beach a waste-free site. 19 students were lucky enough to join other volunteers to serve their community by reviving the beach.
